    • yes when cold the engine runs leaner causing the noisy rattle and things get quieter when the engine gets warmer. remember we are running a deisel engine not a petrol job , listen to the truck when he sits beside you at the lights.

    • Ever since new, my 07 12GS right cylinder makes a either a click, rattle, or knock, depending on engine temperature, on engine startup. It also seems to getting louder (28,000 miles on the odo). It doesn't make any notable noise on cold startup.

    Oct 21, 2016 · Hi, I have a few concerns about my 3 week old 2016 Honda Civic EX-T. There is an engine grind/rattle sound when I start my engine. At first I thought it was just a cold start, but it happens pretty often and not only on cold days. It would happen about 1-3 times a day. I also experience a very loud deceleration sound.
    The sprung-hub center setup damps out the majority of the power pulse variations, resulting in little to no rattle. Due to the frequency of the power pulses, slowing down the engine slightly more at idle by turning on the A/C and loading up the alternator with headlights and other electrical draw may increase the amount of residual rattle.
    4.0l's are notorious for valve rattle on cold start-up. There is really nothing you can do to make it go away short of completely replacing the valve train in the top end, and that isn't a permanent fix. It's is an top end oiling issue from the factory. Just don't race your engine on cold start-up until the rattle stops.
    It should not start but just crank over. Then after your oil light goes out, stop cranking the engine, release the accelerator and try to start the engine normally. I found this in an overseas forum where they also have occasional chain rattle on startup of their QR25DE engines and what it does is prime the timing chain tensioner with oil pressure instead of relying on the internal spring at startup.

    The high pressure fuel pump definitely makes more noise on start up in the cold, especially when it gets down to the teens and below. But even just 40 degrees, and it starts getting a little louder. Maybe take a short video with audio on cold start up and post to this thread. That would help us diagnose.

Hypertutectic pistons are the culprit. A few years ago I posted many posts on the subject here on this forum as to why they rattle.

      I suspect that this noise is coming from the oil pump. It sounds exactly like the dry-start rattle just after an oil change, when the filter and lower oil passages are empty. I know it's not the filter itself as I've tried 5 different oil filter brands with the same noise occurring despite the different filters.
